Banat & Crisana

The westernmost region of Romania, Banat and Crisana, will surprise you also by the well proportioned mix of multiculturalism, history, traditions and culture. The european influence is perhaps best represented here. But this is not the best part. In Banat and Crisana you will be amazed by the well-worked plains and by the mountainous areas with exceptional landscapes.

Here are some tourist attractions that you should not miss.

Nera Ravine (Cheile Nerei)

For those passionate about hiking and nature, here is a spectacular area, unique in the world. These are the Nera Ravine, located in Caras-Severin county. You will also discover in this area the Bigar Waterfall, named by a magazine „the most beautiful waterfall in the world”.

Herculane baths (Baile Herculane)

Named the pearl of Banat, Herculane Baths is the most important spa resort in Romania, with an age of about 2,000 years. In modern time, the spa town has been visited for its supposedly natural healing properties: hot springs with sulfur, chlorine, sodium, calcium, magnesium and other minerals.

Even though time has left its mark on the buildings, the place enjoys the visits of many Romanians and foreigners, especially due to the special natural landscapes.

The mountain landscape

Besides the rich and fruitful plains, the Banat can also offer exceptional mountain landscapes. For example, the largest mountainous area in this area is Semenic, with an altitude of 1,445 meters.

Another tourist attraction is the iron road that crosses the Anina Mountains, recognized as the most spectacular railway route in Europe.

Another natural area, with unique landscapes, you will find it not far from Oravita. It is the Danube Clisura, a place where the Banat Mountains intertwine with the blue of the Danube. Here you will find other natural attractions such as Almajului Mountains, Veterani Caves and Ponicova. Also in this area you will discover the largest stone sculpture in Europe – Decebal’s Statue.

Timisoara city

A visit to Banat would not be complete without discovering the capital of this region, Timisoara, a city of premieres (first electric lighting city in Europe), a place where history blends with the modernity, but also an exceptional cultural destination.

Crisana region

Crisana welcomes its tourists with a lot of attractions, both natural historical. If you are interested in natural attractions, you can visit the cave complex at Hoanca Coului, the famous Bear Cave near Chiscau or Unguru Mare Cave.

Another attraction is the Wonder Spring, in Stana de Vale, water that is said to have a healing effect, being one of the purest and most appreciated spring waters in Romania.

Cultural and historical attractions: Oradea and Soimos Fortress.

Food

Banat cuisine often surprises with a combination of flavors and flavors, often sweet and spicy. Here you will find borrowed recipes from Serbs, Hungarians, Germans and Swabians.

Some traditional Banat dishes: „Clove on potatoes” (with ham, onions, vegetables), Rooster soup with homemade pasta, Peasant pie with cabbage, Spicy gulas.

Vineyards

Another area worth visiting is Minis Vineyards, as well as the entire hill area around the Zarandului Mountains. Here you will discover the Banat wine, sweet and harsh at the same time, which will surely delight you all the senses.
